Choosing a reader for your wedding ceremony

Choosing a reader for your wedding ceremony

Being asked to read at someone’s wedding is such an honour. But sometimes, we ask someone because they are a special person to us but they aren’t necessarily the best person for the job.

So who should you consider to read at your wedding ceremony?

1. Teachers

Teachers make for great readers. They are used to holding the space, getting the attention of the group and speaking slowly and clearly. Teachers are also incredibly used to adapting to the situation so you don’t have to worry if granny has a funny turn during their reading or if a toddler wanders up to the front - they are great at thinking on their feet.

2. Performers

Anyone with a performing arts background; used to be in front of an audience, you can guarantee they won’t be phased by public speaking, will be used to projecting their voice and will provide the X factor. Alike to teachers, they are very used to things going wrong and won’t be phased by your ring bearing dog bounding towards them.

3. The Wedding Celebrant!

That’s right… give your guests a break and ask the wedding celebrant (hopefully it’s me) to read your reading of choice. Your wedding celebrant can carefully intertwine your selected reading into your wedding ceremony, they will be confident in front of the crowd and chances are they will do a better job than any guest.

Final thoughts…

If your guest list doesn’t happen to include any teachers or West End stars, then you could always approach your wedding celebrant for some support. Many (including myself), are willing to work with your readers and support them in reading with confidence on the day. They may even enjoy it!
