Alternative Wedding Ceremony Readings

Alternative Wedding Readings

Choosing a reading for your wedding ceremony can be a tricky business. Poems can make lovely readings, however, poetry isn’t exactly a part of our everyday lives and perhaps there are some alternatives which resonate more strongly with you as a couple and are more relatable.

Here are some ideas:

1. A love letter

When I was planning my wedding, I stumbled across Letters of Note: Love in a local bookshop - a gorgeous little book of love letters and we selected one which spoke to us for our own wedding ceremony. Perhaps you have indulged in the art of letter writing or maybe a guest would like to write their own love letter to you as a couple. If you have children, would they like to write a letter to you and their hopes for your marriage?

2. Song lyrics

Do you and your partner have song which is special to you with beautiful lyrics which can be transformed into a memorable reading? My husband and I chose Seasons of Love from the musical Rent and changed the words to match our journey. Swifties and Coldplay fans unite - both artists write lyrics which make stunning readings. Yellow, is one of my favs!

3. Children’s stories

Often short and familiar these make for great readings. They allow wedding guests to reminisce and also, because they are easy to read, children involved in your wedding ceremony may even be happy to read some or all of the story…if you want them to.

Final thoughts…

Do spend some time choosing a reading which means something to you so that the readings are as personal as the wedding ceremony which has been made by love for you by you wedding celebrant – hopefully by me!
